Springing Forth

Continuity is queen. It is a a groggy morning from the weekend. The next area of interest I am exploring is filmmaking. I often wonder how much of the commercial production of a fashion house engages my interest rather than the joy of seeing fashion in motion through film. As I embark on the next layer of my interest I scaffold passions.

I discovered this creative process while in Bali, Indonesia when we began making content and then in Baltimore making short-films. As a child my dad enjoyed watching films with Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly and Katherine Hepburn. Those early influences have remained in my imagination and I have translated them into finely made and worn fashion.

There is also the plot that of the heroine who is fighting to break free from the conundrum of her mind. I hope through my filmmaking others can find their own power to stand tall by choosing progress. I am starting to gradually integrate the sewing side by reading books daily and watching tutorial videos. I honor that each small step I make everyday is moving me forward towards an abundantly joyful fashion life.

Sometimes it is hard to accept when a dream is not for you. I fought so hard for this factory dream, when in the end the truth is I never truly connected to the factory setting. Beautifully made fashion should be made in inspiring environments. I am grateful that life does not always give us what we want.

My first PhD research proposal was denied. I did not write the study that was in my heart. I wrote what I thought would be good for the academic institution in which I work. But in the end, I have gone back to the drawing board to the books and areas of interest I am most interested in exploring.

I am holding the natural dyes textiles from an artisan in Nusa Penida that I worked with on some fashion projects in the past. I recently visited his growing gallery and am so proud of his progress.

A few years back I showcased the Balinese embroidery work that I love. So far I have only made them into an opera shawl but have interest to turn them into dresses.
